Humanity and music are intrinsically linked. From prehistory to modern pop culture, music has always been a meaningful way for us to connect with each other and the world around us.
This workshop serves as an introduction to a musical approach to grounding and mindfulness.
Grounding and mindfulness describe a set of techniques used to draw your attention to the here and now as a way of coping with overwhelming thoughts and emotions.
Music is often used as an optional tool across a variety of approaches such as mindfulness, grounding, and meditation. In this workshop, however, we pull music and rhythm to the forefront.
You’ll learn how to engage with the basics of rhythm and sound, and the physical sensations associated with each, as the basis for new mindfulness techniques.
Don’t worry if you don’t have an instrument to use! You’ll also be guided through the creation of DIY shakers as our tools of choice for this introductory lesson. These shakers consist simply of any kind of container, and any material to put inside that can make noise. For instance: beans (preferably dry) in a glass coke bottle; a handful of coins in a cardboard box; a set of dice in a dice rolling cup; etc.
You will combine the different aspects—playful experimentation with different materials, intentful listening to the different sounds made, a focus on the physical sensations experienced, and learning to engage with our innate sense of rhythm—to engage with music as a way to connect more fully to the present and the world around you.
This workshop is a great first step for individuals who have never played an instrument before or are new to the world of mindfulness and grounding. It is also a valuable resource for those who may be steeped in grounding and mindfulness techniques and want to learn a fresh approach through music and rhythm.
