You may have a lot of questions about life coaching.

“What is a life coach?”

“How is coaching different from therapy?”

“What kind of people hire a life coach?”

“What does coaching entail?”

“Could I benefit from a life coach?”

Let’s start by introducing you to our life coach, Kylyn.

In my personal journey I’ve seen the value of building candid relationships with others, finding creative outlets, engaging with a personal form of spirituality, and integrating “whimsy” into my daily life; things that can sometimes be overlooked in conventional counseling. I’ve taken this personal experience and combined it with nearly a decade of working with teenagers with challenging behaviors and their support systems to hone my approach to life coaching.

First and foremost, we cut through the “shoulds” of life and get to the core of who you are and what you truly want. Then through accurately and honestly labelling your challenges, goals, and behaviors, we are able to work together to find solutions to the roadblocks in your life. Solutions that are practical and custom-fit for your needs, not the one-size-fits-all approach you may find elsewhere.

I look forward to walking alongside you on your journey and helping with some of the baggage that can gather along the way.

Now that you know the who, let’s talk about the what.

What life coaching is not:

It is not therapy

While your life coach has personal and professional experience that can help guide you on your path, they are not a licensed therapist. This means they cannot do things such as diagnosing you with any mental illness or prescribing medications.

It is not focused on the past

Life coaching is focused on practical results to achieve goals in your present and your immediate future.

If barriers in your present are coming primarily from trauma, addiction, or other past-related issues, you may be referred to a therapist who has the training and support network to diagnose and effectively treat such issues.

In many instances, if desired, your life coach can still be available to work with you while you are receiving this higher level of care.

Your life coach is not a new best friend

The relationship between you and your life coach is a professional one. Compared to a close friend or family member, this professional dynamic enables your life coach to be fully objective when giving feedback and guiding you to solutions. They know you exactly as you are, today.

This also means that, unlike a best friend or supportive family member, you are free to “fire” your life coach at any time if you feel like things are not working out.

This professional boundary helps ensure you get the support you need.

So then, what is life coaching?

It is practical and goals-based

Rather than focus on what has happened in the past, your life coach will target what you want out of your present and future.

Your life coach will work with you to identify and define your goals for your life, as well as the barriers that are standing in the way. They will then work with you to find solutions to overcome those barriers, together.

It is centered on you

You set the agenda for every meeting. You set your goals. You decide on what solutions you want to try, and which ones worked for you. You decide when you need to try something new.

Your life coach’s job is to support you. Sometimes this may mean sharing a “hard truth,” or pushing you to achieve your goals. But it is always led by you.

It is regularly re-evaluating your goals and needs

You and your life coach will routinely re-evaluate and revise your goals to ensure they are always accurate to your here-and-now. You will also regularly reassess your strategies to overcoming barriers and modify them as needed.

How long you see your life coach depends entirely on your goals and what you want out of life coaching. Life coaching is flexible, in that it is goals based. Once you accomplish one of your goals, you may decide to set a new goal to work with your life coach on achieving. Most clients eventually reach a point where they no longer feel that they need a life coach at that stage of their life. They sometimes part ways, and sometimes take a break; returning when they hit new barriers in their life.

The amount of time this takes varies greatly from person to person, and can be anywhere from a month or two, to a year or more.

It is ongoing, compassionate support

What this looks like will depend on your needs. Flexibility in the type of support available is one of the benefits of life coaching compared to therapy.

All clients will meet with their coach for one-on-one “sessions,” typically weekly. These meetings can be in-person or via video chat or phone call. Their purpose is to update your life coach on your progress, reflect on how things have been going, and collaborate on new solutions to overcome barriers as they ebb and flow.

Often your life coach may assign “homework.” This can be things like journaling throughout your week, tracking how often or when certain behaviors crop up, or challenges to try new approaches, etc.

Your life coach can also be available between sessions for questions or emergency meetings as needed. They are available via phone call, text message, or email, and will always try to respond within 24 business hours to all communication.

Your life coach can also be available for “debriefs” after major events; discussing an incident to help you evaluate how things went, as well as plan strategies for improving how things go in the future.

All clients receive the same ongoing compassion and support. What this looks like can vary greatly depending on your needs.

Do I need a life coach?

Everyone can benefit from a little extra support; whether that’s ongoing over an extended period of time, or just short-term to help achieve a specific goal.

Anyone who finds a gap between where they are, and where they’d like to be, can find value in hiring a life coach.

Why struggle on your own, when you can draw on the compassionate support and valuable experience of a life coach?
